Today is indeed a day of joy and celebration! Singapore has finally won its Olympic medal after its first since 48 years ago. Even though the ladies didn't manage to beat china in getting the Gold Medal and letting us have an extra public holiday, the Silver was already very impressive enough for this small country of ours.
Even for me, who usually wouldn't watch table tennis matches due to the several matches required for a game, was watching the match through out and having this strange anxiety for every point loss to China. During the Award Ceremony, the moment Singapore was handled the medals, it was really a touching moment. So much more compared to National Day itself.
However, many people who aren't supportive to this Olympic win are criticizing that it wasn't a true Spore win because all three players were originally PRC. I think this is just a naive and selfish way of thinking. In this very face paced and everything technology century, every country requires foreign talents. If Spore were to stick with our countryman alone, we wouldn't be Spore now. We would most probably still be very much like our neighbor, Malaysia. I wont want to explain any further details of my thoughts as 'Malay'sians, as in the 'Malays' there are very sensitive.
You see, nowadays people are migrating and declaring citizenship in other countries as they feel much more comfortable in their new living environment. Just like the ladies in our Spore team. If they were to stay on in China, would anyone still recognize them there? Would China spend money on nurturing ther abilities? ..... The answer is No....
We should put ourselves in other people's shoe and think from their point of view. One day if some company wants to pay you twice, triple or even ten times you current pay to scout you over to their corporation in some other country, provide accomodation, personal vehicle, and pay to allow your family to move over with you, and will make sure you get your citizenship there, won't you want to go? ................................
